Despite roadwork on Hecker Pass Road, local runners should have no difficulty getting to Mt. Madonna County Park for the 30th annual Mt. Madonna Challenge on Sunday, according to race organizer Bill Flodberg.

However, Flodberg is expecting a slightly smaller turnout as a result of the project. “People seem to think they won’t be able to get the the park, but that’s not true,” he said. “There shouldn’t be any delays.”

Flodberg said about 80 runners have signed up so far, but more are expected. Many runners register on the day of the race, he said.

The Mt. Madonna Challenge features two events, a 6K Salamander Walk and race and a 12K run, which will begin at 8:30am and 9am, respectively.

The events will be held at the Sprig Lake picnic area at the base of Mt. Madonna County Park, a facility of the Santa Clara County Parks and Recreational System located on Highway 152.

The race serves as a fundraiser for the South Valley Symphony. Gavilan Joggers and Striders are joint sponsors.

Both runs follow established trails within Mt. Madonna County Park. The scenic courses take participants through groves of oak, manzanita and redwood trees. The 6K (3.6-mile) loop has an elevation gain of 700 feet while the 12K loop course has an elevation of 1,200 feet.

Race day registration and entries received after Aug. 14 will be assessed $30, which will include shirt and cap. Registration begins at 7:15am the day of the race. Medals will be awarded to the first three places in each age group in both races. Trophies will be awarded to the first-place man and woman in the 12K race.

Online registration can be done at www.active.com or www.theschedule.com. Completed registration and checks should be mailed no later than Aug. 14 made payable to the South Valley Symphony and mailed to P. O. Box 1347, Gilroy, CA 95021-1347.
