Hollister – With Live Oak in town, the San Benito baseball team knew it could make a statement by defeating the defending Tri-County Athletic League champion. The ‘Balers followed through with a 6-3 victory that kept them atop the league standings.

Senior pitcher Breyon Canez picked up the victory by throwing four strong innings, but the ‘Balers’ offense gave him more than enough to work with.

Trailing 2-0 when it first came to bat, San Benito (6-1, 2-0 TCAL) promptly answered with two runs of its own. The hit parade continued as the ‘Balers pounded the Acorns’ pitchers for 12 hits on the afternoon.

San Benito sophomore Brian Haggett and senior Karson Klauer both hit solo home runs to pace the hosts’ offense.

“We were hittin’ it all over the place,” said ‘Balers head coach Michael Luna.

Live Oak (1-2 TCAL) fell to 3-4 overall.

San Benito returns to action on Monday when it visits Gilroy in a make-up game. The ‘Balers have the chance to improve to 3-0 with a win, but Luna knows the Mustangs will be ready.

“It’s a rival,” said Luna. “They’re going to be fired up to play us.”
