Engagements
Garcia – Esquivel
Diana Rochelle Garcia and Osbaldo Esquivel, both of Hollister, will be married on Nov. 19 at Sacred Heart Church.
Garcia is a 1998 graduated of San Benito High School and she also went on to early childhood education at Gavilan College. She currently works at San Andreas High School as an instructional aide, and she is the daughter of Luis and Rosemary Garcia.
Esquivel graduated from SBHS in 1997 and is employed with the City of Morgan Hill. He is the son of Abel and Martha Ester Esquivel of Hollister.
Brandon – Hanson
Drew McNown Brandon, son of Dr. William Brandon and Melissa Brandon of Hollister, and Jenna Lee Hanson, daughter of Laura Picot of Morgan Hill and Dane Hanson of Hollister, have decided to wed.
The couple was engaged in San Luis Obispo in December of 2004 and will tie the knot next summer.
Hanson is currently a sophomore studying animal sciences at Cal Poly, and Brandon is in his final year at the school studying business administration.
The couple will continue to live in San Luis Obispo after they marry.
Marriages
Piombo – Keller
Cari Piombo, of Lockeford, and Ryan Keller, of Stockton, were married July 16 at St. Joachims Church in Lockeford.
Piombo graduated from Sonoma State University in 2000 and is currently employed with University of the Pacific in Stockton. She is the daughter of Richard and Deborah Piombo of Lockeford.
Keller is a 1995 graduate of San Benito High School and also graduated from Sonoma State in 2000. He is employed by Pace Plumming Supply in Stockton and is the son of Keith and Linda Keller of Hollister.
The couple honeymooned in Jamaica and has made their home in Stockton.
Baxter – Mueller
Malia Siobhan Baxter and Matthew Mueller, both from Morgan Hill, were married on June 25 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Gilroy.
Malia earned a bachelor’s degree from Menlo College and is now employed with eBay. She is the daughter of Lita and Ed Fox and Mike and Lynn Baxter of Morgan Hill.
Matthew earned a bachelor’s degree from Siena College in Londonville, New York, and is now assistant coach for baseball at Santa Clara University.
He is the son of Jeff and Lisa Mueller of Morgan Hill and Kris and Leroy Green of Fresno.
The couple spent their honeymoon in Kapalua, Maui and now live in Santa Clara.
Military
2nd Lieutenant Ila S. Reyes
Air Force 2nd Lt. Ila S. Reyes has entered the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Md.
The medical student will be matriculated, trained and prepared to serve as a physician in the Army, Navy, Air Force and the Public Health Service to meet the combat and peacetime medical needs of the Armed Forces.
The medical school curriculum includes a concentration of preventive medicine, primary care, and emergency medicine, which are directly related to military medicine, tropical diseases, disaster medicine, military readiness and adaptation to extreme environments. Reyes will graduate in 2009. She is the daughter of Sydney G. and Sarita Pereira of Brega Court, Morgan Hill and the wife of Marvin.
Airman 1st Class Aaron Hernandez
Air Force Airman 1st Class Aaron Hernandez is currently deployed overseas at a forward operating location in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Hernandez, a security forces leader with one year of military service, is normally assigned to the 28th Security Forces Squadron, Ellsworth Air Force Base, Rapid City, S.D.
He is the son of Gustavo and Belia Hernandez of Hollister. The airman is a 2003 graduate of San Benito High School.
Navy Fireman Evan J. Arnold
Navy Fireman Evan J. Arnold, son of Susan M. Arnold of Garden Grove, Calif. and Johnnie J. Arnold, Jr of Morgan Hill, and his shipmates returned from a three-month summer underway period while assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk, forward deployed to Yokosuka, Japan.
Arnold is a 2002 graduate of Marina High School of Huntington Beach, Calif., and joined the Navy in November 2004.
Air Force Cadet Charles J. Neal
Air Force Cadet Charles J. Neal has completed Basic Cadet Training and earned the rank of cadet fourth class at the U.S. Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, Colo. The cadet is one of more than 1,300 men and women who completed the rigorous six-week orientation program. The training prepares cadets to enter their first academic year at the academy.
At graduation, the cadet receives a bachelor of science degree and a commission of second lieutenant in the Air Force. He is the son of Daniel and Barbara Neal of Morgan Hill and is a 2005 graduate of Live Oak High School.
Navy Midshipman Teal A. Peterson
Navy Midshipman Teal A. Peterson, son of Zeta M. Peterson of Morgan Hill and Phillip J. Peterson of Morgan Hill, recently took part in summer training at sea.
Peterson, a Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) student served with Submarine Squadron 11, San Diego, Calif. Peterson is a 2002 graduate of Live Oak High School.
Joseph Manuel Vargas
Joseph Manuel Vargas of Hollister completed the U.S. Naval Recruit training Command in Great Lakes, Illinois on Sept. 2. He will be stationed in Bremerton, Washington aboard the USS John C. Stennis. He is the son of Manuel Vargas of Hollister and Melinda Carrasco of Gilroy.
Honors
Shannon Ellen Derry
Shannon Ellen Derry graduated Magna Cum Laude earning a bachelors of science degree in criminal justice from Loyola University Chicago in May. Shannon earned Dean’s list honors from the College of Arts and Sciences and Magis Program distinction for community service while attending Loyola. She attended Brownell Elementary School (now Luigi Aprea) and Brownell Junior High in Gilroy before earning her high school diploma from Notre Dame High School in Salinas. She is currently pursuing a masters degree in criminal justice from Loyola.
Cynthia Walker
Director Nathan Corona awarded Gilroy resident Cynthia Walker the Lew Gardner Award for 2005 at White Stag Leadership Development Camp. The Lew Gardner Award honors the staff member who most exemplifies the spirit of selfless service for which the late Lew Gardner is remembered. White Stag is a weeklong camp held in August in the Sierras. The program is open to all youth ages 11 to 17, and develops leadership skills in an outdoor environment. Lions Club Welcomes New Members
The Gilroy Lions Club recently welcomed three new members: Lion Rob Lubich, Lion Pat DeLeon, and Lion Debbie Law. Lions Rob and Pat received their official Lions’ jacket and were inducted during the general meeting held July 25. Lion Debbie was unable to attend the ceremony due to an injury. Both Lions were inducted by long-time member Lion Bill Hart.
The Gilroy Lions Club is part of an international service organization of more than 1.3 million members in 193 countries and geographic areas. The Gilroy Club was established in 1956. The mission of the club is to participate in and contribute to programs dedicated to helping people who are visually and hearing impaired in our city and beyond. The club also sponsors a variety of programs that benefit our local community. The club is made up of men and women who have a desire to give back to the community by contributing some of their time to various public service and fund-raising projects.
