Police arrested a man they say played a part in multiple strong-arm robberies two weeks ago in downtown Gilroy, including one that left a victim hospitalized with serious injuries, according to the Gilroy Police Department.

Jonathan Aviles, 18, of Gilroy, was arrested Wednesday and booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail on suspicion of robbery. A second suspect, 20-year-old Antonio Rodriguez, also of Gilroy, remains at large.

Both are suspected of at least two robberies, which occurred in the 7200 block of Eigleberry and 7400 block of Monterey Road, police said.

On Aug. 6, the GPD received a call of an assault victim who was suffering from serious, but non-life threatening injuries at Saint Louise Regional Hospital. After contacting the victim, police determined he had been assaulted and robbed about 10 p.m., according to the GPD.

Police soon received another call reporting an armed robbery several blocks from the first incident, which occurred in the 7400 block of Monterey Road in downtown Gilroy.

The suspects wielded a knife, threatened the victims and robbed them of an undisclosed amount of money, police said.

Police learned that security guards from a downtown business approached a subject, later identified as Antonio Rodriguez, who they said harassed customers and attempted to rob them near the reported crime scenes, according to the GPD.

Anyone with information about this case can contact GPD Detective Michael Bolton at 846-0350, or anonymously at 1-800-782-7463.
