Gov. Gray Davis must call the Legislature back for an extraordinary session regarding Megan’s Law. As you know, I introduced AB 1184, which would have extended Megan’s Law and made it available on the Internet with exact residence and workplace address for convicted sex offenders.

The U.S. Supreme Court held earlier this year that states may now place this information on the Internet.

As of January 1, 2004, the state of California will no longer have any provisions for the public to gain access to information regarding serious and high-risk sex offenders. The current law is about to sunset and the Legislature has failed to enact a more comprehensive Megan’s Law.

We must act now. There are absolutely no legal obstacles to utilizing the fullest extent of the law to protect our children.

On behalf of California’s families and the safety of our children, I ask that the governor convene the Legislature on this critical issue before it’s too late.

Todd Spitzer,

Assemblyman, 71st District
