The Morgan Hill Unified School District received a contribution of switching equipment from Google Inc. this week.
The donation will replace aging network equipment and provide improved connectivity. It will also support several of the district’s goals, including the implementation of eSchoolPlus, a new student information system that will provide teachers and parents district-wide with access to student data such as attendance, discipline and grades.
The school district learned Google was giving away equipment that it no longer needed, so it applied for a mini-grant and were invited to meet with Google representatives who offered the equipment as a gift.
At the elementary and middle school level, the district submitted a proposal for a grant from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to implement Scholastic’s READ 180 to aid students who are performing “well below” the state benchmarks in reading and language arts.
At the high school level, a small pilot will be implemented that will provide migrant students with netbooks to access online curricula to support their efforts to pass the California High School Exit Exam.
Twenty-five students at Central Continuation High School will have access to the netbooks and online tutoring program.
The district also supports a working TV studio at Sobrato High School as part of the Sobrato Arts program. It televises student generated programming on a daily basis. The district has plans to investigate additional staff development opportunities for all teachers and parents in the district as well as distance learning for students via the district network and/or the TV station.
