Under-reach is a term we use in the set-up for a pitch shot. The
pitching wedge and sand wedge are the heaviest clubs in the bag.
The weight of the clubhead will cause your arms to overextend
beyond the point where the clubhead was at address. The result, a
premature unhinging of the wrist, causes the club to hit the ground
before the ball.

To ensure that the bottom of your through-swing occurs at the correct point behind the ball, choke halfway down on the grip and hover the clubhead slightly above the ground just behind the ball. This will prevent you from hitting the ground before the ball.
Holding the club lightly, swing your arms to the desired back-swing position. Maintaining a 90-degree angle from your left forearm (for the right-handed golfer) and the shaft of the club, let the gravity of your arms and the weight of the clubhead take over entirely throughout the swing.
The club will unhinge correctly, hitting at the bottom of the arc and resulting in a clean crisp shot.
