Justin Leonard chips on to the 17th green at CordeValle Thursday

Rocco Mediate found his stroke on the green and fired a
round-best 7-under-par 64 Thursday at CordeValle Golf Club. He
highlighted his day with an ace on the par-3 third hole
SAN MARTIN — Rocco Mediate found what had been missing from his golf game.

“It’s all been putting for me lately. It’s just been destroying me,” the 48-year-old tour veteran said. “Today it was just working. If there’s such a thing as easy, today was easy.”

Mediate fired a 7-under-par 64 to pace the 132-player field in the opening round of the Frys.com Open at CordeValle Golf Club in San Martin on Thursday.

“I had fun out there. I don’t care what day it is. It’s still fun for me,” Mediate said.

Mediate didn’t need his putter on the par-3 third, stroking a six-iron on the 190-yard hole for a hole in one.

“That made it a lot easier,” he said.

Bo Van Pelt, Ryuji Imada and Paul Goydos all carded 65s early in the day and sit in a three-way tie for second.

Four players are bunched in a tie for fifth at 5-under.

The tournament’s defending champion, Troy Matteson, shot a 1-over 72 and is in a tie for 69th.

The two golfers whom Matteson beat out in a three-person playoff at last season’s Frys.com Open, Ryder Cup captains pick, Rickie Fowler, and Jaime Lovemark, signed off on scores of 69 and 68, respectively.

Other notables: Tim Clark (68), David Duval (68), Tom Lehman (68), Justin Leonard (69), John Daly (70).
