Leland scored three goals in the first half on the way to
beating Live Oak 4-1 Monday
SAN JOSE — Live Oak girls soccer coach Tony Vasquez insisted his team’s first loss in league play doesn’t mean the end of the world, no matter of how bad the score was.
Vasquez kept it in perspective Tuesday, a day after the Lady Acorns were blindsided, 4-1, at Leland.
“It was ugly,” he said. “We came in maybe a little bit cocky, and they took it to us. They were clearly the better team that day.”
The last unbeaten team left in the Mount Hamilton Division, Live Oak (6-2-3 overall, 4-1 league) entered the match ranked No. 12 by the San Jose Mercury News and riding a four-game win streak.
Vasquez is still confident his Acorns can secure one of the division’s four section-playoff berths and challenge for the Mount Hamilton title. They dropped into second place, less than a game behind Branham.
“That loss could end up helping us. It should help us refocus,” Vasquez said. “The girls were happy to be in first place, and that’s great. But you have to play your hardest each game.
“When you’re on top, every team is coming after you. Leland came after us.”
The Chargers (5-5-1, 4-2) were coasting toward a fourth consecutive win by halftime after building a 3-0 lead.
Megan Rauschnot scored Live Oak’s goal off a corner kick by Amanda Morgan midway through the second half.
