The Live Oak girls golf team ended their season Monday at the Tri-County Athletic League Championship Tournament in Salinas, finishing ninth out of 10 teams.

But that came as no surprise. What did was the play of the team’s newest member.

Sophomore Kalie Gill, who just recently joined the team without ever playing golf, came out and played great, Coach Mike Rubino said.

Gill was able to knock out five players from other teams in the tournament and was really happy with her play after participating in her first match for the Acorns, Rubino said.

Although there was an error on her scorecard and her play was scored wrong, Rubino said she played better than everyone expected.

After showing some promising talent and giving the team a little excitement in their last match of the year, Rubino said Gill was “really excited” and will definitely be back for next season.

Junior Anne Trull – who was the closest on the team to making Central Coach Section Playoffs – also played a good match for the Acorns, shooting a team best 110 for the day.

An individual must shoot a100 or lower to qualify for the CCS.

Stephanie Chak was also noteworthy for Live Oak, finishing with a 118.

Santa Catalina won the tournament, shooting a 372 while sending five players to CCS.

Live Oak shot a 484 and finished second to last in the TCal Championship Tournament.

Looking back at the season, Rubino said he had a young and very inexperienced team, but also said they should be better in 2004 because of what they went through this season.

“Hopefully next year we’ll build on that experience,” he said. “We’ve got a couple of new girls that are very strong athletes and I’m looking forward to great things from them.”

The Acorns will have five returning players next season. And now that he knows Gill will be on the squad, the coach is even more enthusiastic.

“She’s going to be good,” Rubino said. “(She was) the most excitement we had all day.”
