Live Oak was on the short side of Gilroy’s offense after a 16-0 loss in the Watsonville Tournament Saturday and then a Tri-County Athletic league 8-0 loss Monday.

“We got behind in the count, and they knew what was coming,” said Live Oak coach Barry McDonnell. “If we picked the corners, we got walks. We gave up too many free passes.”

The last time Live Oak (6-13, 1-8 TCAL) and Gilroy (12-10, 4-5 TCAL) met, Live Oak lost in a closer 3-1 game.

Gilroy opened the game up Monday with three runs in the first inning off of a couple errors.

“It is one of those things where the ball finds you when you come in,” McDonnell said.

Shortstop Catalina Rawers was injured before the game and had to sit out.

Starter Jackie Jacob was hit by pitch. She was removed as a precautionary measure after the sharp line drive found its target. Jacob, who was still recovering from a knee injury, is listed as tentative.

Freshman Kaitlyn Rauschnot came in to pitch for Jacob. Rauschnot also pitched the game on Saturday because McDonnell wanted to give Jacob a rest.

“We didn’t want to put Jackie in with the sore knee,” McDonnell said. “If you favor it, it will throw off your normal motion. We just had a lot of throwing errors. It was a combination of the younger team and of rushing plays.”

Rawers had two hits for the Acorns on Saturday. Eileen Grove and Jackie Tennant had the only two hits on Monday.

“We’re going to have to work a little more on our hitting,” McDonnell said. “We might have to sacrifice our time on defense to get some extra at bats in.”

Live Oak will play a home game against Hollister Wednesday and then at North Salinas on May 6.
