The Gilroy Police Department is responding to reports of a residential burglary and hostage situation in progress near the 7700 block of Santa Barbara Drive.

According to GPD Sgt. Chad Gallacinao, police received a report of armed suspects at residence at 2:40 p.m. Tuesday.

As of now the suspects are still inside and armed along with the residents of the house, Gallacinao said. The number of suspects or residents have not been released.

Gallacinao said a SWAT team and Santa Clara County’s BearCat tactical armored vehicle have been deployed with nearby residents being asked to evacuate.

“The GPD is also trying to ensure the validity of the report,” Gallacinao said.

As of now, the BearCat is in front of the house with authorities trying to get the suspects out over a bullhorn.

The California Highway Patrol is coordinating traffic control with streets closed off at Third Street and Santa Barbara, San Miguel Street and Third, Santa Barbara and San Miguel, and Third and Santa Paula Drive.

At this point, GPD does not have any further information for release due to the investigation being active and the situation being so “dynamic,” according to GPD Sgt. Stanford.
