Live Oak football coach Mike Gemo was named the 49ers Charlie Wedemeyer Memorial High School Coach of the Week for Week 3.
Gemo learned he earned the honor earlier this week when he received a call from the 49ers.
Although he was happy to receive the recognition, Gemo was quick to pass off the credit to the players and assistant coaches
“It’s a great honor for the coaching staff and the football program,” Gemo said. “It has more to do with the kids and the staff than it does to do with me.”
Because he was named coach of the week, the Live Oak football program will receive a $1,000 donation from the 49ers Community Foundation.
He said any amount of money is huge for the program. He said he’s not sure how the money will be spent, but that it will be used to benefit the kids.
“We’re going to use it wisely,” Gemo said. “We’re going to reward the kids some how, we’re not sure yet how.”
Gemo will also be recognized at a 49ers game and have a chance to attend a practice.
Gemo has been a 49ers season ticket holder, he said, for several years.
“I’m really excited to have this opportunity,” Gemo said. “The 49ers have a great organization. This is a great thing for the school and will be good for the program.”
Gemo is the third coach to receive the award in 2013. Previous winners were Ken Paralta of Sacred Heart Cathedral and Steve Goodbody of Salinas High School.
