Gavilan College softball team proved its mettle with a 14-hit
attack en route to a 10-8 victory over the host team in a
weather-shortened game. The Lady Rams improved their overall record
to 8-5, and 2-1 in Coast Conference play.
Despite playing in a steady drizzle at Cabrillo on Thursday, the Gavilan College softball team proved its mettle with a 14-hit attack en route to a 10-8 victory over the host team in a weather-shortened game.

“The weather was fine through the first two or three innings, then the drizzle came,” said Gavilan coach Tim Kenworthy. “I was very proud of how well our gals played under rather adverse conditions, but the rain made it tough for both teams – especially for the pitchers.”
The Rams started the game off with a bang, striking three times in the top of the first inning. Kristina Pena led off with a line drive single to leftfield. Katie Arao walked, and then Kristine Miles loaded the bases with a sharp single to left. Pena scored on Courtney Colianna’s groundout to short, then Justine McDonald drove in Arao and Miles with a smash hit to centerfield.
Cabrillo notched one run in the bottom of the first, and two in the fourth, but the Lady Rams scored single runs in the third and fourth innings, two in the fifth and three in the sixth and took a 10-3 lead going into the bottom of the sixth.
In the sloppy field conditions, Cabrillo mounted a rally in the bottom of the sixth scoring five runs against starter Ram starter Gina Botkins, who was able to hold the Seahawks in check for most of the game.
Colianna came on in relief for the Rams with two outs in the sixth, and Cabrillo closed the gap to 10-8 before Colianna shut the door by striking out the Seahawks’ Mary Campbell to end the inning and the game, which was called after six full innings due to unplayable conditions.
Leading the Lady Rams’ offensive attack were designated hitter Erinn Gouker, who went 3-for-4 with four RBIs on the day, catcher Justine McDonald, who went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, centerfielder Katie Arao, who went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, Kristine Miles, who was 2-for-4 with a run scored, and Amanda Jackson, who was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
“We’ve been hitting the ball real well, we’re playing solid defense, and we’ve been getting some strong pitching performances from our three pitchers,” said Coach Kenworthy.
Gavilan was scheduled to play a make-up game against Hartnell Friday and are set to play in the Monterey Peninsula College tournament this weekend.
