After 18 months of inactivity, the former BMX Park on Butterfield Boulevard might get a face-lift.
The City Council will vote Wednesday whether or not to accept a proposal to turn the park into a community garden.
The proposal, submitted by nonprofit The Morgan Hill Community Garden and recommended by the Morgan Hill Parks and Recreation Commission, asks that the plot of land be changed to a community garden and that the nonprofit will take care of all maintenance to the area.
The six members of the board of the Morgan Hill Community Garden, which was founded in July of last year, hope to show the benefits of growing fruit and vegetables, according to the group’s Web site.
“It not only promotes gardening for those who don’t have the utilities and sun to do so but also the spirit of sustainable living,” said Sherrie Wren, Morgan Hill Community Garden President.
If passed, each gardener would need to follow guidelines and practices that the Morgan Hill Community Garden and the city would agree upon.
The Morgan Hill Community Garden plan on dividing the land into 27 different plots for different families, Wren said. The organic garden will promote composting, no pesticide usage and the donation of extra fruits and vegetables.
The former BMX Park, which opened in 2003, closed nearly two years ago after the park was invaded by ground squirrels during the construction of the Courthouse Garden. The ramps were destroyed and the park has remained vacant since.
The city opened a 16,000-square-foot skate park last summer in the parking lot north of the Centennial Recreation Center.
The Morgan Hill City Council meet in the Council Chambers at 17555 Peak Ave. at 7 p.m Wednesday.
