MORGAN HILL — Maggie Cropp and Megan Rauschnot, it’s all too fitting their last names rhyme with “stop” and “shot.”

In the style of Kobe and LeBron, the two Freshmen of the Year from Sobrato and Live Oak are bound to be high-caliber rivals for the next three years; Cropp as the goalkeeper, Rauschnot as the goal-scorer.

The fact that they’re good friends adds to the mix.

“They’re both amazing athletes,” Sobrato coach Paul Nishimatsu said. “They beat us 1-0 this year, and I think that was the first time Megan has ever been able to score on Maggie.”

Starting for the defensive-minded Lady Bulldogs, Cropp got plenty of experience under her belt this winter. She collected 289 saves on the way to posting a 2.0 goals-against average. She had one shutout.

“She’s going to be huge in the long run,” Nishimatsu said. “She was a pleasure to coach this year. We knew she was good, but her work ethic and leadership skills were even more impressive.

“She could probably play college ball if she wants to.”

Rauschnot, who also played field hockey for Live Oak, ran away with league Freshman of the Year honors, tallying a team-best 38 points with 18 assists and 10 goals. The forward’s breakout season was no surprise to Live Oak coach Tony Vasquez, who also coached Rauschnot’s sister, Christen, a former league MVP and defenseman at UC-Davis.

“I knew she was going to be a force, but I’m surprised she was able to be so consistent,” Vasquez said. “When it’s all said and done, she’s going to be one of the best that I’ve coached at Live Oak.”
