Dear Editor,

I was most impressed by four of the candidates for school board at the candidates’ night at City Hall. Peter Mandel did not mince words. Our middle schools and high schools are not doing a good job and are rated very low compared to the rest of the nation.

Nevertheless, he and his wife have worked tirelessly to upgrade the quality of education in the schools their two children have attended. Though both kids go to middle school, Peter is hopeful and enthusiastic about making changes for the better in these schools.

Julia Hover-Smoot is an “inclusionist.” She is committed to bringing the “other 80 percent” of our students up to par with the top 20 percent that do succeed, and go on to college. Kathleen Sullivan is one of those untiring and faithful parents who have given countless hours to being on parent school committees and guiding her own son through the labyrinths of special education classes. She knows the system from the ground up.

And hats off to Harlan Warthen, a businessman who said he has been to every school board meeting in the last two years. Now, that’s persistence and dedication.
