Sobrato (1-0) at Leland (1-0), 7 p.m., Pat Tillman Stadium
With their offensive might and deepest crop of veteran talent, the Sobrato Bulldogs are out to turn the corner in 2011.
They can take their first big step forward today against Mount Hamilton Division power Leland, ranked No. 7 in the county by the San Jose Mercury News.
The Chargers reached the Central Coast Section Division II semifinals in 2010 but are still stinging from a 35-34 upset at Sobrato in Week 1. Coming off a 52-7 drubbing of Highlands, they can make amends tonight before a home crowd, led by their star tandem of quarterback Jason Habash and running back Chris Santini.
Sobrato counters with quarterback Jerry Jacob and running backs Obi Mbonu, Drew Glines and Derrick Taylor, who were impressive last week in a 40-26 win over Christopher.
Live Oak (0-1) vs. Christopher (0-1), 7 p.m., Richert Field
Trevor Bearden almost single-handedly delivered a win last week for the Live Oak Acorns.
The sophomore tailback/safety totaled 240 yards rushing, 80 yards receiving, five touchdowns, six tackles and a fumble recovery in a 56-37 defeat at Gilroy.
Bearden could put up big numbers again today in Live Oak’s 7 p.m. home opener against Christopher at Richert Field. But the Acorns would be happy with just a win.
That goes double for the Cougars, who lost 40-26 to Sobrato in Week Zero and are out to avoid being swept by the Morgan Hill schools for the second straight year.
Christopher fell 21-7 to Live Oak a year ago but is better equipped to challenge the Acorns this time around behind the Cougars’ first senior class. That includes third-year starting quarterback Brandon Pickens, who last week completed 14 of 36 for 277 yards and three touchdowns to one interception.
