Dear Editor,
Thank you very much for supporting the Live Oak High School Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) chapter’s annual Thanksgiving Canned Food Drive which provided a happier Thanksgiving for 125 needy families in the Morgan Hill School District.
All of the work began with more than 80 students who stood in front of five supportive stores in Morgan Hill asking for donations of cans and money on Nov. 13-14.
At the same time, the entire student body of Live Oak was also asked to bring cans to their classes where about two tons of food was collected.
Household items such as laundry detergent, dishwashing detergent and toilet paper were purchased with the monetary donations.
In addition, turkeys, tortillas, bread, beans, rice, and potatoes as well as flour, sugar, cake mixes and stuffing mixes became a part of the balanced meal plan.
The bulk of the sorting and packing into 125 huge apple boxes (one for each family) took place after school on Nov. 22-23.
In addition, large grocery bags were packed for each family. Perishable items such as turkeys were packed on Nov. 24, a school holiday.
Thanksgiving Eve was the date of the delivery to the 125 families with the help of Lion’s Club members as the drivers.
The approximately 25 students and the adult drivers are to be commended for their support in actually completing the project.
The weight of everything delivered was well over five tons, thanks to everyone in the community who contributed their time, energy and goods.
