SAN MARTIN – One of two women rescued from a burning house in San Martin last Wednesday has been released from Santa Clara Valley Medical Center and the other, whose condition was labeled as critical, has been upgraded to serious, according to a hospital spokesman Monday.

Alice Olson, 98, and her daughter Betty Gardner, 73, were treated for burns and smoke inhalation at the SCVMC burn center in San Jose following the fire, which caused damage estimatged at $200,000 to their single-story home at 13150 Llagas Ave.

Gardner suffered burns to 30 percent of her body, while Olson’s injuries initially were thought to be life-threatening. Firefighters pulled Olson from home, and she was quickly taken by medical helicopter to SCVMC.

Both women were sleeping when the house burst into flames.

Cause of the fire remains under investigation.
