The Live Oak field hockey team opened its regular season with a 2-0 victory over crosstown rival Sobrato on Friday.

It was a close, defensive battle between the two schools. The game’s first goal didn’t come until 25 minutes had past in the first half, when Live Oak finally got on the board.

“I called the play and I told them to focus on their skills and get back to our game plan,” Live Oak head coach Gina Sanders wrote in an email.

Live Oak senior Amy Reed started the play by sticking the ball to senior Sydney Barker. She paused, waited for her opponent to make a move and ran into open space where she fired the ball toward the net. Reed, standing near the goalie, recieved the ball and threw it into across the goalie to Macey Dunne, who scored the season’s first goal.

The game remained close as Sobrato continued to threaten to even the score. But in the game’s final moments, Live Oak pulled away with its second goal.

Barker, running past defenders, fooled the last two Bulldog players, and the goalie, to put the ball in the net. The goal came with 17 seconds to play in the game.

Both locals are in action today.
