This past week, at the AT&T Pro-Am at Pebble Beach, one of my students for many years, John Ellis, qualified for the tournament. A few days prior to the Monday qualifier, John came to me with a question regarding his position at the top of his swing. “Something just doesn’t feel right,” he said.
Using the video camera to analyze a few swings, I noticed his hands weren’t fully setting at the top. The result was that he wasn’t properly releasing the club head through the hitting area. I showed him a drill that would allow him to hinge his hands, enabling the club to properly set at the top. The big question was would he be able to trust this swing change, especially under pressure? Well the gamble paid off and he qualified for his first PGA Tour event.
My point is that when you are making changes, be patient and, most important, you need to trust your swing. If you are struggling with your swing, I don’t recommend you try to fix it on your own. Conbsult a PGA professional. Their trained eye will take the guessing out and give you the proper tools and drills to change and improve your swing.
