Dear Editor,
The Morgan Hill Times has printed several columns urging the public to vote “no” on the parental notification measure on the Nov. 7 ballot. My family and many friends will be voting “yes” because we believe that, for the most people, the family remains the best place to find love and support in difficult situations. The idea that Planned Parenthood, the nation’s foremost provider of abortion, which benefits most from taxpayer-funded abortions, or any other provider is going to have the best interests of our daughter in mind is ludicrous.
The measure provides reasonable safeguards for a girl who might have a problem with telling her parents about her pregnancy.
The rights of parents to know is protected in 30 other states and reports show that the number of teen pregnancies and abortions has dropped in states having these protections. The parents are the ones who will have to deal with any medical and emotional complications after an abortion. Undermining the family is not the way to go.
We are urging a “yes” vote on Proposition 85.
Mark and Marilyn Markham, Morgan Hill
