Spring may finally be in the air this weekend, after Thursday’s occasional showers, as downtown Morgan Hill comes alive with its Downtown Spring Happening.

Events on Saturday include the opening of the Farmer’s Market at the train station, a sidewalk sale by the downtown merchants and a quilt and embroidery exhibition in the Grange Hall.

The forecast for Saturday calls for mostly sunny, clear skies, with the winds calming down and temperatures in the mid-60s to lower 70s. Sunday, Mother’s Day, is also expected to be mostly sunny with mild temperatures.

The Farmer’s Market will open with regular hours, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays through Oct. 25, with fresh fruits, vegetables, flowers, breads and other items.

Downtown merchants will open their doors and mark down prices for their annual sidewalk sale, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Books, works of art, toys, crafts and much more will be available in front of – and inside – local merchants’ stores.

Something new this year is that Piece by Piece Quilters Guild of Morgan Hill and the Gavilan Hills Chapter of the Embroiderers’ Guild of America will hold an exhibition and demonstration of their work during the sale, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the Grange Hall on Fourth Street.

The event, sponsored by the Morgan Hill Downtown Association, is the first time the opening of Farmer’s Market and the sidewalk sale have been on the same weekend. The goal is to bring Morgan Hill residents to the downtown area with a variety of attractions. Local restaurants will be opening, offering breakfast, lunch and dinner for hungry shoppers.

In other events Saturday, residents may take part in City Beautification Day, helping to clean up creeks, roadsides and parks to make Morgan Hill shine. Meet at City Hall, 17555 Peak Ave. at 8 a.m. Participants will receive the official Beautification Day T-shirts. The workday will be followed by a barbecue at Community Park at noon.
