Ann Sobrato High School senior Gabrielle Gamez was honored at the State of the City Address and Community Breakfast for her involvement within San Jose’s District 5 community.
Gamez founded “Shooting Stars,” an enrichment basketball camp targeting at-risk girls from the Alum Rock School District. The weeklong camp taught campers, through positive role model participation, alternatives to combat drugs and gang association along with teaching campers fundamental basketball skills.
In June 2008, Gamez was also awarded the San Jose Mayor’s commendation for her involvement with the Shooting Stars program.
Student, alumni art on display at Gav
Comprehensive bodies of work by six students and alumni of Gavilan College will be on display in the art gallery through Feb. 4. Themes include passion and pride for a lost homeland, explorations of cultural and gender identity, celestial abstraction and the promise of hope piercing through the darkness.
The show features work from Dustin Kinsley, German Estrada, Jonathan Diaz, Natalie McBride, Gloria ‘Chile’ Cifuentes and Kelly Munoz.
Gavilan College Art Gallery is located in the campus library at 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd., Gilroy.
Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Fridays.

Students raise money for program
The Mizuho Student Exchange Program is holding two fundraising events Feb. 7, 8 and 9. Students will sell See’s candy from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Safeway, 840 E. Dunne Ave., Feb. 7 and 8.
Then, from 4 p.m. to close Monday Feb. 9, Chili’s is teaming up with the exchange program and will donate 10 percent of each diner’s check. Those wishing to participate must bring a flyer. Chili’s is located at 1039 Cochrane Road.
