“Can you tell us what other shops will be going into the new Cochrane Shopping Center?”

RED PHONE

The Red Phone took a look at one of the Business Trends columns written by business columnist Garrett Toy, director of Morgan Hill’s Business Assistance and Housing Services, and gleaned enough to answer your question, caller.

Shops that plan on joining the new Target superstore at the Cochrane Commons Shopping Center are Petco, Staples, Circuit City, Chili’s, Red Robin, Sleeptrain, DSW (a shoe store), Cold Stone Creamery, Panda Express and another Starbucks. Gottschalks has expressed interest in setting up shop, but no firm plans are in the works yet. The Red Phone wishes we could give you a timetable when all this will happen, but developers have their own set of problems to deal with, so let’s not indulge in a bunch of guesswork. Target remains the only store now open for business at the shopping center.

Other stores that have expressed interest in joining the center are CostPlus, Pier 1 Imports and Black Angus Steakhouse, but these three businesses have decided that now is not the right time for expansion into new areas. Panera Bakery has decided not to detract business from its new Gilroy store by opening another location in Morgan Hill … at least, not for now.

Toy reminds us that if this new shopping center on the northeast corner of Cochrane Road and U.S. 101 proves to be successful and profitable, that will in turn attract many more businesses to Morgan Hill that are currently in a wait-and see-mode.

ROAD HAZARDS

“On Water Avenue south of Easy Street, there are a couple of hazards. First, the tree branches along Water Avenue are growing into the road. Secondly, a largepot hole that runs the entire width of the road is causing havoc with my vehicle’s shocks.

Please notify Santa Clara County Roads-Airports to take care of this matter. There are people who walk this road and it is an accident waiting to happen. Thanks.”

RED PHONE

The Red Phone took a drive out to your area to check out this situation, caller, but before we could get in touch with the Santa Clara County Roads and Airports, a re-check showed us that the county had already visited your street and had taken care of the overgrowth and huge pothole. Maybe you weren’t the only one letting people know about the lack of maintenance.

TRAFFIC STOPPAGE

“Can you find out when the widening of Barrett Avenue between San Ramon Drive and Butterfield Boulevard will be completed? Detours have been in place for about three weeks, but no work has been done on the street. Currently, anyone stopping at the stop sign on southbound San Ramon Drive cannot see traffic coming from the left and there have been several near misses.”

RED PHONE

The Red Phone was a little too late getting the answer to your problem, since the street is now finished with several new homes in place on either side of the road. We can only repeat what we have said before … private developers are the responsible parties for the construction of not only the houses, but the streets in the area being developed. Since time is money, you would think they would want to finish their work as quickly as possible.

We hope this intersection is now safer and you are enjoying the open thoroughfare.
