A 16-year-old Boys Ranch inmate who escaped Thursday night is back in custody, but this time at Juvenile Hall in San Jose.

Bill Fu, public information officer for the Santa Clara County Probation Department, said Monday that the teen had turned himself in at 4:20pm on Friday afternoon.

The inmate escaped Thursday during a power outage at the William F. James Boys Ranch on Malaguerra Avenue in east Morgan Hill. The inmates, ranging in age from 15 to 18, were walking to the empty Holden Ranch facility adjacent to the property when a fight broke out between the 16-year-old and a 17-year-old inmate. After the fight, the 16-year-old escaped from the ranch. There were no weapons involved and no one was seriously injured in the brawl.

After a series of escapes earlier this year, the James F. William’s Boys Ranch has remained relatively quiet as county supervisors struggled to find ways to keep the inmates from fleeing the facility. Last week’s escape was the first in about a month.
