Club sweeps tourney, wins games in dramatic fashion

The El Toro Brew Masters Water Polo Club won another tournament this past weekend, Saturday, Oct. 18.

This was El Toro Brew Master’s second tournament victory for the 2003 season. El Toro had neither substitutes nor a regular goalie.

Due to size of pool teams played 5-on-5 and each El Toro field player had to take turns playing goalie if he wanted to take a break from the intense swimming during each match.

To further complicate things, the other teams were much younger college club teams.

The first game was against the host, Saint Mary’s A with El Toro winning 9 – 8 in sudden death overtime. The game was pretty evenly matched overall and lead went back and forth throughout the game.

Rob Dwyer scored the final point on a four-meter shot. Rob’s shot was a perfect hard and fast low right corner.

Next, El Toro beat Chico 14-13. Dwyer made one of the more impressive scores of the game and this time from the cage. As goalie, he took a long shot in the last two seconds of the third quarter. The Chico goalie had the sun in his eyes and was blinded to the incoming shot.

Finally, El Toro overpowered the St. Mary’s “B” team in a 15 – 9 victory. All players from El Toro scored equally well and from all over the course in this match.

The El Toro Brew Masters Team was Geno Acevedo, Meno Acevedo, Gary Krage, Marty Asplund, Dwyer and Richard Andron.

El Toro Brew-Masters WPC is open to any interested men or women from the ages of about 19 years and older. For insurance purposes registration with USA Water Polo is required.

If interested you should have some aquatic sports background and be (or want to become) a moderately strong swimmer. Practice is held on Saturdays from 9:30-11 a.m. at the Live Oak High School pool. Cost is $5 per session.

Details: call Geno Acevedo at (778-2739 or e-mail
