GILROY — A league championship wasn’t enough for Britton Middle School’s eighth-grade boys cross country team.

With a low score of 49, the Bobcats placed first at last Wednesday’s section finals meet at Christmas Hill Park in Gilroy.

They were led by Kyle Alexander and Kalum Bergstrom, who finished second and third, respectively, after being passed on the final decent by the top runner from San Jose’s Chaboya Middle School. Britton’s third runner to cross, James Gabbard, placed 13th, and teammate Matthew Hanlon followed in 14th. Troy Scheufflele rounded out the Bobcats’ top-five finishers in 17th.

Britton’s Tanner Hallinan and Nikolai Suchan also ran at the meet, which was postponed because of heavy rain the day before.
