Cheers to the Santa Clara Valley Water District for unanimously
voting against a 5 percent cost-of-living raise this year. A
no-brainer by all counts.
Cheers to Assemblyman Joe Coto (D-San Jose) for authoring legislation that will impose a host of reforms relating to open government and responsible spending at the Santa Clara Valley Water District.

The main thrust of the legislation is to fill all seven board seats by the voters, thus giving South County additional representation if the district’s largest geographical region is split in two. Oh, and cheers to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger for signing the bill.

Jeers to the readers who post the rude, racist and bigoted comments on the Times Web site. While the vast majority are regular folk who share a common interest – the best for Morgan Hill and its residents – some people just can’t help themselves from posting hateful comments. Stop it.

Cheers to Las Madres for organizing a garage sale to benefit 3-year-old Hailey Abrego, who was diagnosed with a brain tumor and has undergone two major surgeries.

The fundraiser will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday at the corner of Second Street and Del Monte Avenue.

Jeers to the city’s public works department for not closing Monterey Road downtown during the Oct. 13 storm that dumped nearly seven inches of rain on Morgan Hill.

While the amount of rain that fell was nearly twice what was forecast, the main thoroughfare needed to be closed to prevent the flood waters from entering businesses as a result of the vehicles driving through the flooded street.

Cheers to the Santa Clara Valley Water District for unanimously voting against a 5 percent cost-of-living raise this year. A no-brainer by all counts.

Now let’s hope the board doesn’t grant themselves a 10 percent raise next year, as they did in 2008 after foregoing the 5 percent raise in 2007.
