You know, even for an experienced guy like me, I’m still puzzled
by many things that I see every day. I’m puzzled as to why people
litter, why people place graffiti on public places and just what
skateboarders expect people to think of them when they destroy
public property.
You know, even for an experienced guy like me, I’m still puzzled by many things that I see every day. I’m puzzled as to why people litter, why people place graffiti on public places and just what skateboarders expect people to think of them when they destroy public property.
I’m curious as to why humans are so eager to mistrust each other, why so many of us hesitate to volunteer and why some try to “game” the system in order to get something. What do all of the above have in common? They all tend to subtract from community – instead of building community.
While these things puzzle me, and probably you, they are an ongoing presence in our current society and so we adjust and move on the best we can.
For those of us more interested in building our community, there are a number of upcoming events worth mentioning in this column.
- Foremost is the city’s upcoming 2nd Chance Week Sept. 11 through 19. Produced in cooperation with the city of Gilroy, 2nd Chance Week includes two weekends of community garage sales with numerous opportunities to “give your stuff a second chance” wedged in between.
For details on the week’s events and a garage sale application, go to www.secondchanceweek.com. Those of you desiring information on paper can call or e-mail me at the address below.
- We have scheduled a second stormdrain marking event for the morning of Aug. 28. This is a great event that allows you and your family or friends to have an instant eco-impact by making our creeks cleaner and safer for local wildlife.
The city supplies each volunteer with a kit that includes everything you need including a map, safety vests, brush, medallions and mallet. It’s a great activity for a family to do together in teams of two or three, though it’s perfectly doable as an individual, as well.
Adult supervision, however, is required in order to keep participants safe.
Meet at the Community and Cultural Center at 9 a.m. to get your materials. Please contact us in advance to preregister.
- Coastal Cleanup Day is coming up Sept. 25. We will have at least two locations in Morgan Hill along West Little Llagas Creek and Edmundson Creek that we are cleaning up and will have a celebratory meal at the end, as well.
Go to www.cleanacreek.org for more information or contact us at the number below for details as they develop.
For now, just reserve this morning on your calendar as another eco-opportunity.
RecycleBank News
As you probably know, RecycleBank is now active in the community.
I recently received my first “You’ve Got Points” e-mail indicating that my recycling was collected, weighed and the points were credited to my account.
I’ve accumulated 190 points to date and instantly converted 100 of them to obtain a $5 off coupon for Safeway and a “Buy One, Get One” coupon for a local restaurant my family and I frequent.
With those two coupons, I’ll have already covered an entire year of the costs of this program … and that’s just from the first month’s worth of points.
So far, so good for the Eulo Household! I’m happy as can be by how easy it is to participate in the program.
By the way, I’ve heard from some residents that they didn’t want to participate in the program because they are concerned about the city knowing how much their home is recycling.
I doubt that I can make their fear go away, but I can tell you that monitoring individual recycling habits is pretty much the last thing we have an interest in doing.
After all, if we really wanted to monitor or penalize people, we could already go from house to house and see who is and who isn’t recycling.
So what are you waiting for? Jump in and test the RecycleBank waters and see how you can get rewarded for recycling.
Anthony Eulo is a program administrator for the city of Morgan Hill who looks forward to receiving many more RecycleBank rewards. He welcomes your questions, comments and thoughts and can be reached at 778-6480 or
