A 4.4-magnitude earthquake near Berkeley jolted local residents awake early in the morning Jan. 4, according to various social media posts.

The temblor was centered about 2 miles east of Berkeley in the East Bay, states the U.S. Geological Survey’s website. It occurred at 2:39am Jan. 4.

The earthquake did not result in any notable injuries, damage or other emergencies in Morgan Hill, according to an MHPD dispatch employee.

Numerous residents posted on Facebook that the quake woke them up.

Another, smaller earthquake occurred near Cupertino about an hour later, at 3:34am Jan. 4, according to USGS. That temblor registered 2.5 on the Richter scale.
