Two dead in string of wrecks; bus passengers elude tragedy

A two-vehicle collision in San Martin this morning resulted in several downed power lines and a four-hour road closure, according to authorities. The driver of one of the vehicles suffered major injuries as a result of the accident.

About 7:10am Oct. 24, a Chevrolet Malibu was traveling northbound on the U.S. 101 ramp to San Martin Avenue eastbound, just west of Sycamore Avenue, according to a press release from the California Highway Patrol.

At the same time, a 2007 Isuzu box truck was traveling eastbound on San Martin Avenue, approaching Sycamore, police said.

For an unknown reason, the driver of the Malibu allowed the left side of his vehicle to collide with the right side of the Isuzu just after the Malibu merged onto San Martin Avenue, according to police. The collision caused the Isuzu to leave the roadway and collide with several utility poles on the south shoulder of San Martin Avenue.

The Isuzu overturned and came to rest on its side. When police and paramedics arrived, the saw numerous high voltage power lines and poles down across the roadway, according to police.

It took about 30 minutes for authorities to de-energize the fallen utility lines, at which point paramedics were able to reach the driver of the Isuzu and treat him for injuries, police said. The Isuzu driver, a San Jose man, was transported to San Jose Regional Medical Center with major injuries.

Because of the downed power lines, the roadway was closed for about four hours, according to the CHP press release.

Police do not think alcohol or drugs were a factor in the accident, which is under investigation.
