The class of 2005 Leadership Morgan Hill Project that began on this year’s Earth Day, April 22, will be unveiled on Sept. 14, A walking tour of the newly upgraded recycling containers will begin with a “Drop it Right” toss of recyclable bottles and cans in the redesigned downtown recycling containers.
These clearly marked bottle and can recycling containers are each framed with a local artist painting depicting a message of recycling. Fun, unique, and individual paintings were chosen for the containers. The redesign also includes cement containers with specialized recycle lids to distinguish these from trash containers.
Clean recycling of bottles and cans requires that no trash “contaminates” the container. The class project includes educational materials about the benefit of clean recycling
The 23 members of the Leadership class, who live and/or work in Morgan Hill, chose the recycling containers as their class project. They wanted to make a permanent and sustainable contribution to downtown, especially important as the City of Morgan Hill enters its Centennial Celebration in 2006. The project was done in conjunction with South Valley Disposal and Recycling and the City of Morgan Hill.
Local sponsors and artists will be recognized at a reception following the “Drop it Right” tour. The 15 “new” recycling containers are located along Monterey Road throughout downtown. The art was chosen from a contest of local artists’ work created to support the project with the “Clean Recycling” message.
In addition to rehabilitating the recycling containers, another important part of the class project is to raise awareness of clean recycling of bottles and cans. At the Taste of Morgan Hill, class members will pass out balloons and “Did you know?” facts at every recycling container. Also, the unique logo was designed at the initiation of the project and will continue to be a highlight of the educational campaign.
Leadership Morgan Hill is an organization of people who contribute to our city through volunteerism, education, and involvement. The mission is to ignite the passion, inspire the commitment and sharpen the skills of the leaders who will create a dynamic Morgan Hill. The Leadership Morgan Hill 2005 class will graduate on Sept. 26, 2005.
• That in a lifetime, the average person will throw away 600 times his or her adult weight in garbage – leaving a legacy of 90,000 pounds of trash for his or her children?
• We throw away enough aluminum every three months to rebuild an entire commercial air fleet?
• We throw away enough office paper annually to build a wall 12 feet high, stretching from Los Angeles to New York?
• Currently, less than a third of glass bottles sold in the U.S. are recycled?
• In 2002, less than one-fifth of all plastic beverage bottles in the U.S. were recycled?
• Recycling one aluminum can saves enough electricity to run a laptop computer for four hours?
