A male motorist died in a traffic accident on the north side of Morgan Hill Monday morning, according to police.

About 10:59am Jan. 13, Morgan Hill Police officers responded to a collision involving two vehicles at the intersection of Sutter Boulevard and Jarvis Drive, reads a press release from the Morgan Hill Police Department.

Arriving officers located both vehicles stopped on the northeast shoulder of the intersection with major damage, police said. A male subject was trapped in one of the damaged vehicles, with significant visible injuries. The subject, who had been driving the vehicle, was unresponsive to officers.

Police officers and Morgan Hill Fire Department personnel began immediate rescue efforts, police said. Emergency medical responders were able to extricate the driver from the vehicle, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. As of Jan. 14, authorities had not released the identity of the deceased driver. 

The other driver involved in the accident remained at the scene and has cooperated with investigating officers, according to police.

Officers did not observe any signs of either motorist driving under the influence, police said. It is unknown if both drivers were wearing their seatbelts.

Just prior to the collision, witnesses observed one of the vehicles run the stop sign at the intersection of Sutter and Jarvis, according to police.

The MHPD Traffic Unit is investigating the collision.
