A suspected drunken driving accident Thursday night sent two Morgan Hill women to the hospital after one was ejected from the vehicle she was riding in.
Shawn Edwards, 33, of Morgan Hill, was the driver of the other vehicle, a Ford Ranger pickup. He was taken to county jail on a felony drunken driving chargeafter treatment for back pain.
The accident occurred at approximately 9:15pm Thursday as Edwards drove south on Monterey Road. According to witnesses, he attempted to make a U-turn in front of the Post Office and collided with the Honda driven by Jessica Picazo, 20, of Morgan Hill.
Picazo and her passenger Marta Shimun, 25, of Morgan Hill, were both wearing seatbelts, according to police, but Shimun was thrown from the auto upon impact.
When officers arrived, Shimun was lying approximately 25 feet from the Honda in the roadway. Picazo had been able to get out of the Honda and call 9-1-1 as she tried to help Shimun.
Shimun and Picazo were released from area hospitals after treatment for injuries.
Edwards was also able to get out of his pickup, which had overturned. Police described him as “uncooperative” and said there was a strong odor of alcohol on his breath. Police said Edwards had to be subdued in order to take him into custody.
