New Recycling Program now in use
The City of Morgan Hill, together with South Valley Disposal & Recycling, announces a new, expanded recycling program for Morgan Hill residents.
The biggest feature of the new program is that residents will now be able to recycle food scraps and food-soiled paper such as pizza boxes and napkins in their green yard trimmings cart, which will now be picked up on a weekly basis.
“Over 30 percent of our trash is food waste and food-soiled paper,” emphasized Tony Eulo, Program Administrator. “These new programs can make a huge difference in the success of our City’s program.”
Food and beverage containers, including glass, metal, plastics, and aseptic containers, as well as mixed paper and cardboard, will continue to be collected in brown carts on a biweekly basis. This program will now include scrap metal and plastic bags. In addition, household batteries placed in zippered bags on top of the cart will now be recycled.
The City of Morgan Hill urges residents to sort and recycle as much material as possible into one of the recycling containers to cut down on the amount of garbage being sent to the landfill. A variety of container sizes are available to suit each household’s needs. In addition, new kitchen containers for storing food scraps are now available.
For more information on the new program, or for recycling other materials such as household hazardous wastes, TVs and computers, or used motor oil and filters, contact the City of Morgan Hill Environmental Programs Division at 779-7247. To request recycling containers, contact South Valley Disposal and Recycling at 842-3358.
Morgan Hill businesses given Green Business recognition
Two Morgan Hill businesses were recognized as Green Businesses by the Santa Clara County Green Business program during a recent Morgan Hill City Council.
Gretchen Hefner of the Santa Clara County Green Business Program and Tony Eulo, city program director recognized St. Catherine’s Church and the Agriculture and Resource Management South County Office as “Green Businesses.”
These businesses, said Hefner, “have earned the recognition as ‘Green Businesses,’ having achieved environmental benefit for Morgan Hill. They serve as models that have gone beyond compliance with environmental protection regulations.”
Hefner and Eulo stated both businesses demonstrate exemplary commitment to the environment and have taken measures to reduce the amount of energy they use, solid and hazardous waste reduction, pollution reduction, protecting the environment and conserving natural resources.
