It was oh, so close for the Live Oak High girls track and field team at North Salinas on Thursday.
Led by Cobbie Jones, who competed in the 300 hurdles for the first time in her high school career to fill in on points for the Acorn squad, short-handed Live Oak fell short by just two points 66-64 to the Vikings.
But not to be lost in the final team score was the performance of Jones, who won the 1,600 and the 400, then ran a blistering 48.4 in the 300 hurdles in her first try.
According to Live Oak coach Dean Raymond, the time could be among the best in the Central Coast Section this year.
“It just shows what a talented athlete she is,” Raymond said.
Several other Acorn girls had outstanding performances to help make the final team score close, including Azucena Atanacio, who took first in the discus and shot, Lisa Herrera, who won the 3,200, and Heather Molyneaux, who took second in the 100 and the long jump, and placed third in the 200.
Meanwhile, apparently inspired by Jones’ feat, Live Oak senior Billy Wong decided to try the same thing — run the 300 hurdles for the first time in his high school career, Raymond said.
And, the results were similar as Wong won the event to go along with his wins in the 3,200 and the 1,600.
Unfortunately, Wong’s effort wasn’t enough to help his Acorn boys squad avoid an 89-42 defeat at the hands of the Vikings.
Other top finishers for the Acorns included Brandon Powell, who sat out the 300 hurdles but won the 110 hurdles despite battling soreness, Jesus Atanacio, who finished second in the 800 and third in the 1,600, Allen Cunanan, who took second in the 100, and Orlando Lucero, who was second in the high jump and third in the triple jump.
Live Oak is set to compete at the Alisal Festival Invitational this weekend, then host Gilroy in TCAL dual meet action on Thursday.
