Dear Editor,

I happened to have been in the front office when Deputy Ron Breuss was reprimanding Live Oak senior, Chris Smith, who had apparently thrown a ball at the deputy. I listened firsthand to the deputy’s verbal onslaught, during which, Smith sat slumped over in his chair responding with, “I don’t know. I just wasn’t thinking.”

In my opinion, the deputy clearly overstepped his bounds and should have let Live Oak’s trained administrators handle the student’s discipline procedures. In that way, Breuss could have focused on his purpose for being in Live Oak that day, which was to educate the students about the negative repercussions of drinking while intoxicated.

I hope that not only would this case be dismissed and the teen’s record cleared, but that the deputy would enroll in anger management classes and refrain from working with adolescents. He not only used demeaning and derisive language towards the student, he also alerted the public of the boy’s educational status at Live Oak, which is truly a confidential matter. I also feel that an apology is warranted for Chris and his family. The deputy can start off by explaining, “I just wasn’t thinking.”
