You must scoop the ball on the upswing. That always puts your hands behind the ball as you club head is swinging up at impact.
When this occurs, you strike the middle of the ball with the front edge of the club and the result is a thin shot. You know the one … when your club vibrates in your hands.
To hit a crisp shot, your hands need to be directly over or slightly in front of the ball at impact.
With your hands leading the club head instead of vice versa, you can strike the ball at the bottom of the swing or on the slight downswing. This ensures contact will be with the middle of the club on the way down instead of with the leading edge on the way up. The result is a solid crisp shot off the turf.
