There are two types of golf shots: a tee shot with a driver and a fairway shot with an iron or fairway wood. In both cases, the angle of the shoulders helps dictate the trajectory of the ball.

First lets take the tee shot. You want to angle your shoulders slightly upward (left shoulder higher than the right) so that you can sweep the ball of the tee on the upswing. By setting your shoulders that way to start, there is a better chance they will be that way at impact.

With the fairway shot, you want to strike the ball on the downward arc. In that case, let’s feel that the shoulders are level, or even the left a little lower than the right. This will give your swing a better chance to strike the ball on the downward arc and thus put backspin on the ball and elevate it.
