Red Phone

“Dear Red Phone, it’s very annoying, frustrating and dangerous when bicyclists ride in large groups around town! Just this past weekend, there were groups riding on the backroads of rural west Morgan Hill who refused to ride single file in the bike lanes. They had  no consideration for the vehicles around them and surely did not comply with the traffic laws they are required to obey. I find this rude, arrogant and unacceptable. When they act this way they not only put themselves in danger but drivers and pedestrians around them. It’s time to educate them! Thanks Red Phone.”

Red  Phone: Dear Irritated, Red Phone receives a call like this several times a year, most notably when the weather warms up and more and more cyclists this the road.

But, like most people behaving badly, it’s a small percentage of bicyclists who act the way you described. However, you are correct in that they put themselves and others in danger by disobeying laws of the road. That’s why we have them, to keep people safe. Not sure what police can do, other than to start ticketing a few. Word will get around.

Good caller, perhaps getting the word out that we share the road will help, but Red Phone’s not holding out much hope. We’ll see what happens.

No plans to retrofit Coyote Reservoir

“Red Phone, I understand the Santa Clara Valley Water District is considering a parcel tax to retrofit – among other things – Anderson Reservoir. Are similar plans in place for Coyote Reservoir?”

Red  Phone: Dear All Shook Up, Red Phone got a similar call last summer, and contacted Marty Grimes, a spokesman for the Santa Clara Valley Water District.  He said the Calaveras Fault is located directly under the Coyote Reservoir dam. “With today’s safety standards and knowledge about earthquake faults, we have not yet conceived of a rehabilitation project that could make Coyote Dam safe enough to fill the reservoir to capacity.”

Hope that answers your questions, good caller. See you on the lake.
