Setting up a shot correctly is certainly the most important thing you can do. Without a correct set-up, you can’t expect the shot to go where you want it to go. Though there are many facets to the set-up, I will talk about the arm-to-club relationship.
When looking at yourself in a mirror, make sure you form a lowercase “y” with your arms and the shaft of the club. For right-handed golfers, the left arm and shaft should be one straight line with the right arm joining it at the grip.
With all clubs, the shaft should point just inside the front hip. But depending on what club you are hitting, the club will angle either straight down with the driver or back toward the middle of your stance with the fairway metals and short irons.
You should never set up with an upper case “Y” with any full swing. The only time you would want this is with a putting stroke or even with some chip shots.
