Tommy Naranjo hit a line drive in the bottom of the ninth inning to bring in the winning run for the Morgan Hill Coyotes in the championship game of the USSSA Team Appreciation Tournament for 13-and-under teams on Nov. 11 at Twin Creeks Sports Complex in Sunnyvale.
The Morgan Hill Coyotes and the NorCal Waves (Santa Cruz) battled all night in a game that started at 7 p.m. due to rain delays.
There were five lead changes, including a dramatic seventh-inning two-run, two-out rally by the Waves to send the game to extra innings.
The Waves scratched out another two-out run in the top of the ninth inning to take a 7-6 lead.
The Coyotes rally started with leadoff walks to Joey Persons and Jackson Gion. After a wild pitch advanced the runners, Jakob Conlan’s infield grounder scored Persons to tie the score.
Naranjo hit a two-strike, two-out shot to right field. As the ball landed safely in the gap, Gion walked home with the winning run. Jakob Conlan was named Tournament MVP after pitching 10 dominating innings while only allowing one run.
The Coyotes allowed one run in three games to advance to the championship game.
The Coyotes are comprised of players from Morgan Hill, Gilroy and Salinas and are managed by Rich Ross. They finished as runner-up in two tournaments before their Nov. 11 championship win.
