The Morgan Hill City Council and their alter egos, the Redevelopment Agency, and the Planning Commission will meet with three consulting firms tonight to hear updates on the Downtown Specific Plan, which will detail the city’s goals for the 18-block downtown area, bound roughly by Butterfield Boulevard and West Main, West Dunne, Del Monte avenues.

While this is a routine update, according to city officials, it’s the first brainstorming session following the failure of Measure H, which would have added 500 residential units to the downtown area to allow mixed-use housing.

Assistant to the City Manager of Downtown Development David Heindel said the two city bodies will hear from architectural firm WRP/Solomon E.T.C., construction firm Plant Construction and financial advisory firm Keyser Marston on what type of project would best suit the two blocks on Monterey Road between First and Third Streets, and how the project could be paid for.

“We’re looking for the best approach, in terms of a project that would be economically viable for an investor,” Heindel said. In the discussions with the council, Heindel said he hoped they would “potentially reach some conclusions as to which approach to take and to focus on over the next six to 12 to 24 months” depending on the economy.

The Redevelopment Agency has bought $19.7 million worth of property downtown since December 2007, including the Granada Theater and Downtown Mall.

The meeting begins at 6 p.m. in the El Toro room of the Morgan Hill Community and Cultural Center, 17000 Monterey Road.
