The city appears to have accomplished the challenging task of establishing lane assignments for swim team practice at the Aquatics Center.
The council Wednesday accepted the following Park and Recreation Commission recommendation for the lane allocation: The Morgan Hill Swim Club (Makos) will swim at the Aquatics Center and the Silicon Valley Aquatics Association (El Toro Aquatics) will swim at Sobrato High School. El Toro Aquatics will use the Aquatics Center as needed, from September through January and June through August.
Makos will work with the city to make sure El Toro will have fair use of the pool during those months. The scheduling of city programs will have priority over the swim teams.
The issue of lane assignments has been challenging. Previous attempts by city staff to negotiate the distribution of lanes with both parties had failed. In February, staff proposed a lottery system for assigning lanes, but the council rejected the proposal and instead, assigned the PRC to recommend a lane assignment policy. In the meantime, through August, the city council supported splitting the pool lanes between the two groups – ten being used by Makos, and three by El Toro Aquatics.
Also in its recommendation, the Park and Recreation Commission asked the city to explore developing a municipal swim team.
