The city could soon limit watering to five days per week during the summer, and just one day per week during the winter, if staff recommendations are approved Wednesday night.
During their regular meeting, the Morgan Hill City Council will consider declaring a “Level 1 Water Supply Shortage.”
This would institute further reductions in water use in Morgan Hill to meet the Santa Clara Valley Water District’s call for 15 percent mandatory conservation due to the ongoing state drought, now in its third year.
Along with prohibiting irrigation on Mondays and Thursdays, a Level 1 Water Supply Shortage would oblige residents and business owners to fix leaks within 72 hours of notification by the city, and prohibit washing driveways or other hard surfaces unless there’s a safety hazard.
In a report to the council, staff recommends watering be prohibited on Monday and Thursday from April through October. From November through March, however, staff recommends Wednesday as the only day per week watering is allowed.
According to project coordinator Tony Eulo, the city used 2.8 billion gallons of water in both 2007 and 2008, despite an ever growing population.
Eulo said that if the council declares a Level 1 Water Supply Shortage, the next step – either calling off the shortage or entering Level 2 with further water use restrictions – depends on the weather.
The Morgan Hill City Council will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday night in Council Chambers at City Hall, 17555 Peak Ave.
