San Benito County authorities released the identity of a Hollister man suspected of shooting his estranged girlfriend before killing himself July 11 at her Diablo Drive apartment as Enrique Rosales Alvarez, 51, said Lt. Roy Iler of the San Benito County Sheriff’s Office, which also acts as the coroner.
The Hollister Police Department is investigating the case and a spokesman has said all indications point to a murder-suicide.
Shortly after 9 p.m. that Sunday night, county communications dispatchers received a 911 call from a woman reporting she had been shot. The woman said that a man shot her, then shot her mother and himself. Officers from the Hollister Police Department and San Benito County Sheriff’s Office arrived at the home and discovered the apartment locked and secured with a metal security door.
Alvarez shot and killed Dora Gutierrez, 42, at the apartment complex in the 1400 block of Diablo Drive where the couple had lived for about two years, according to investigators. Authorities believe the two recently had separated.
They said Alvarez also shot Gutierrez’s daughter in the abdomen, but she survived after treatment at a Bay Area hospital. That woman’s 5-year-old daughter also was at the home during the shootings, but was uninjured.
The shootings occurred in the 1400 block of Diablo Drive on Hollister’s south side. Police estimated there were about three to four shots fired and no signs of forced entry, said Capt. Carlos Reynoso. He noted that neighbors had heard screaming and yelling before the shots were fired.
