“Go Shorty … it’s your birfday we’re gonna party like it’s your birfday” These lyrics are from 2003’s most popular artist and song “In Da Club” By 50-Cent. This song is also the inspiration for Live Oak’s open dance this Saturday night, Feb. 7.

This dance in the past was called Live Oak’s Decade dance but with an attendance of less than 100 people last year, Live Oak’s ASB believed that it was time for a change. It was then retitled The Valentine’s Dance, but that name was ix-nayed because – let’s face it – dances need to have a purpose or meaning to them. And Valentine’s Day was something that not everyone was for.

Other dances Live Oak are fun for specific reasons, for example: The Sadie’s is fun because girls get to ask the guys and it is held at a ranch. The Bay Cruise is a blast because it is on a boat in San Francisco Bay. The Winter Ball is just a great traditional formal dance for the holiday season. And of course who could forget the infamous Prom.

So what is Live Oak to do. Throw a dance entitled In Da Club of course. That is decorated in a club-themed atmosphere complete with black lights, velvet ropes and a bouncer at the door. Also don’t forget the awesome soundtrack that will be blaring in the background.

The urban feel is not the only thing that makes this dance unique. Admission is only $5 so if you decide that you hate it you only spent the equivalent of what you would one morning at Starbucks. This dance also is great place to meet new people because students at Gilroy High School have been formally invited.

Last week a handful of brave ASB officers ventured off to Gilroy and met with their ASB team. Gilroy’s leadership class and ASB class welcomed us with open arms. The idea of Gilroy and Live Oak coming together for a dance seems like a great idea.

From this first step other events between Gilroy, Live Oak and San Benito highs have been but in the works. Ninth graders from Britton and Martin Murphy are also cordially invited to this fun, collaborative event.

Anyone can attend this even as long as they have a high school ID card. With the movie theater down, bowling alley not in service and billiards is no more. The fact that something entertaining and inexpensive for high school students going on in town is a definite first.

I have no idea how this event will end up turning out. However I do know that this is a dance that is a precedent for Live Oak. Even if it is just my friends and I dressed up in our club wear grooving to the music I think that the fact Live Oak has tried to do something beyond the norm will be feat in itsself.
