Hundreds of people headed to downtown Morgan Hill this morning to celebrate the grand opening of the Third Street Promenade.

The day-long celebration started with the season’s first Saturday Morning Farmers Market, and will continue until about 10 p.m. with a full line-up of live musical performances, martial arts demonstrations and arts and crafts vendors.

“This is a full day of fun and frolic and having a good time,” Mayor Steve Tate said before he and other Morgan Hill officials cut the ribbon for the pedestrian-friendly plaza’s grand opening.

The Third Street Promenade was just completed earlier this year. The $3.8-million project is the first in a series of upcoming downtown revitalization projects funded mostly by the city’s Redevelopment Agency.

“The Third Street Promenade is going to be the catalyst that makes the rest of the downtown come together,” the mayor said Saturday morning.

Christine Chellino went downtown Saturday to see the Japanese Taiko drumming performance at the Community and Cultural Center. She and her two grandchildren walked down the street to the Third Street celebration while they were in town.

Tom Carlson of Boulder, Colo., is originally from Morgan Hill, but hasn’t been downtown in about 30 years, he said Saturday morning. In town on business, he was impressed with the new Third Street project.

“It’s nice to see Morgan Hill grow up a little bit,” Carlson said.

Music and dancing will continue on Third Street throughout the afternoon and evening. A beer and wine tent will open at 4 p.m. Musical headliners fourwayfree and Evolution, a Journey tribute band, are scheduled to play on the outdoor stage Saturday night.
